New poll shows stunning level of Republican support for Mitt Romney

Will Romney run? A new poll shows support for the Massachusetts governor.

Former Massachusetts governor and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is leading the pack, according to a new poll.

The former Republican presidential candidate, who said earlier this month that he is considering a third run for president, has significant support from Republicans.

The poll, commissioned by CBS, shows 59 percent of Republicans in favor of the former Massachusetts governor launching a bid, while 26 percent would rather seem him not run. The poll was conducted among 1,001 Americans nationwide and has a margin of error of +/- 6 percent.

The poll comes as top Republicans have had mixed reactions to Romney’s comments regarding the race for president. The former Massachusetts governor, speaking earlier this month, told a group of supporters that he is seriously considering a bid for president. Romney lost to President Barack Obama in 2012, and Romney failed to capture the nomination in 2008, losing out to Arizona Senator John McCain, who eventually lost to Obama.

Romney has vowed to run a better campaign should he decide to jump in. The former Republican presidential candidate noted he would focus on foreign policy and tackling poverty, two issues he was not exactly known for during his 2012 campaign.

Romney, speaking in San Diego over the weekend, said Republicans should seek to make middle class Americans its key focus during the upcoming 2016 election.

“I believe in the post-Obama era we need to stand for safety, and for opportunity for all people, and we have to stand for helping lift people out of poverty,” Romney told hundreds of Republican National Committee members and their guests.

It should be noted that the poll also showed significant support for former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who is expected to run. Another potential contender, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, lost out former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, 29 percent to 30 percent support.
