WASHINGTON D.C. — United States President Donald Trump said Wednesday that relations between Russia and his country 'may be at an all-time low.'

Trump's comments in the aftermath of Syria's use of chemical weapons last week, and the retaliatory US airstrike that followed.

Stopping just short of accusing President Vladimir Putin's government of complicity in the sarin gas attack against civilians on April 4, Trump nonetheless said that its 'certainly possible' Russia had advance knowledge of the use of chemical weapons by its Syrian ally.

"I like to think they didn't know. But they could have. They were there," Trump said.

Trump said he had no regrets about his government's decision to launch 59 Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airbase two days after the gas attack.

The American President said Syrian leader Bashar Assad left him no choice by gassing innocent children.

"That's a butcher" Trump said referring to the Syrian President, adding that the United States felt they had to do something about the poisonous gas attack.

"I have absolutely no doubt that we did the right thing. And it was very, very successfully done, as you well know," Trump said.

Trump's comments on the state of US-Russia relations echoed a similar assessment by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson hours earlier in Russia.

Despite a less than positive outlook on relations between the two countries, Trump's assessment of his counterpart Vladimir Putin, whom he has spoken of admiringly in the past, does not seem to have changed.

"Putin is the leader of Russia It'd be a fantastic thing if we got along with Putin" Trump said.

Trump made the comments came after a Wednesday meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House.
