WASHINGTON D.C. — North Korea's military is "examining the operational plan" to preemptively hit Guam with ballistic missiles as a way to send a message to the United States, North Korean news agency KCNA said Wednesday morning. The statement quoted an army spokesman as saying that a "preemptive strike is no longer the monopoly of the US."

North Korea's foreign minister warned earlier this week that the nation would use nuclear weapons against the United States if provoked, while President Trump threatened military action against North Korea if North Korean leader Kim Jong-
Un continues his course of action.

"He has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before," Trump said at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J.
Military analysts told CNN that Guam is strategically significant to North Korea because it home to a large component of the U.S. military's forward presence in the Pacific. If the United States were to launch an air strike against North Korea, the aircraft would most likely take off from Guam.

Guam has a defense system to shoot down incoming ballistic missiles, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, said Geoge Charfauros, Guam's homeland security adviser, in an interview with CNN. He said that has "high confidence" in Guam's military presence and the U.S. armed forces as a whole to keep the island and the continental United States safe.
