WASHINGTON D.C. — In the early morning hours of July 26, FBI agents used a search warrant to raid the home of Paul Manafort, seizing documents and other materials in connection with the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The raid on Manafort's Alexandra, Virginia, home came the day after Manafort voluntarily met with staff on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the search warrant suggests investigators may have argued to a judge that Manafort could not be relied on to turn over all documents requested by a grand jury subpoena.

The Senate Judiciary Committee had also issued a subpoena for Manafort to testify at a public hearing last month, but he declined, saying through his attorney that he would only be willing provide a "single transcribed interview to Congress," according to CBS News.

Jason Maloni, a spokesman for Manafort confirmed the execution of the search warrant.

"Mr. Manafort has consistently cooperated with law enforcement and other serious inquiries and did so on this occasion as well," said Maloni, as reported by the Post.

The documents seized by the FBI may include notes Manafort took during the now infamous Trump Tower meeting in June 2016 with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and a Russian lawyer.

Late last month, Manafort retroactively registered with the Justice Department as a foreign agent for work performed as a political consultant for a Ukrainian political party. Special counsel Robert Mueller has taken over the criminal investigation into Manafort's activities.
