United States lawmakers on Sunday asked President Donald Trump to turn over any tapes of conversations with dismissed FBI chief James Comey.

The request could be the beginning of a showdown between them and the White House, as Democrats considered a boycott of the vote on the next FBI director.

In an unorthodox move, Trump last week appeared to suggest on Twitter that he might be in possession of conversations with Comey and warned the former FBI director against talking to the media.

However, the president and a White House spokesman declined to confirm or deny whether such tapes exist.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican, said that the White House should "clear the air "about whether there are any taped conversations.

"You can't be cute about tapes. If there are any tapes of this conversation, they need to be turned over," Senator Graham told NBC's Meet the Press.

Trump's decision last week to fire Comey sparked a political firestorm.

The bureau has been investigating alleged Russian involvement in the US election and possible ties between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

Democrats have accused President Trump of attempting to block the FBI investigation, and have called for an independent inquiry into the issue.

Trump said that he fired Comey because he was not doing a good job. He also claimed that the former FBI director had lost the support of FBI employees.

Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah told Fox News Sunday that if the tapes exist, it was "inevitable" that they would be subpoenaed, forcing the White House to release them.
