President Trump's decision to jettison the Paris accord on climate change has alienated all other 19 member nations in the G-20. The attending heads of state from each affirmed as much on Saturday with the issuance of a final joint statement that criticizes the U.S. rejection of the agreement and pledges that the rest of the world's major economies will all work together to slow global warming and its social and environmental harms.
"We take note of the decision of the United States of America to withdraw from the Paris agreement," the statement reads, adding that "the leaders of the other G20 members state that the Paris agreement is irreversible" and "we reaffirm our strong commitment to the Paris agreement."
Accompanying this statement was a climate and energy plan that upholds the Paris agreement's key planksabove all, the Paris agreement's commitment to prevent global warming from surpassing 2 degrees Celsius. The new plan lays out goals for phasing out fossil-fuel subsidies and for transitioning toward non-carbon-emitting clean energy "as soon as possible."
The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, said on Saturday that she "deplored" Trump's removal of the United States from the Paris agreement. She added that the decision is one that the United States cannot take backWashington cannot rejoin the pact at a later time even if it wishes to.
Since then, however, Merkel and French President Emmanuel Marcon have reached out to other countries who were considering following suit and exiting the agreement as Trump had. Saudi Arabia and Indonesia were two of these countries. Both reaffirmed their commitment to the deal on Saturday, however.
